Chalkboard Paint + Art Journaling and No Halloween Decorating Mojo

Chalkboard paint in my art journal
I am still having a great time playing with this awesome chalkboard paint I blogged about here.
Using it with other paints and papers gives a whole other quality to art journal pages that you don't get with any other medium. It must be the bold black that grounds the pages and brings the eye to focus easier on the words.

Yep, it is true...I wish I had more motivation to do the Halloween decorations this year, but I simply do not. I do have gourds and lots of mums and so, that is how it is going to be. There is a whole lot of other things I am getting done and working is one of them :/
 So no guilt.
I like this little circle I painted and then drew the fox in with colored pencil. I use colored  pencil on all of the areas of the chalkboard paint. And this charming little spookette is a stamp from Stampotique, they have some very cool stamps, go see.

And there candy corn was first colored in solid with white and then I drew in the yellow and orange colors.

Otherwise those colors would have not  been so vibrant on the black paint.
The other paint is yes, you guessed it....my favorite....Designers Gouache.
Now, this page is ready for my personal words.
I have a feeling I am going to find myself in the basement digging out the Halloween decorations before the week is over....if not, I have gourds and mums and a few small hooked pumpkins ;)
I will show you later...but here is an idea...
I sold this on Etsy a few years ago and I have always wanted to do more. I will keep you posted. And, if you don't have the Halloween decorating mojo, be okay with that and go find something else creative to do, I know I will.

Chalkboard Art - Be Inspired

Power of thought - Chalkboard Art
Today I wanted to give you an example of the chalkboard art typography that is trending right now and demonstrate a way to actually produce something wonderful for your journal. No, you do not have to be a hand lettering typography master. I will show you how I created this in my large Strathmore Visual Journal (Mixed Media).
But first, here are a few pictures of my art journal using the Chalkboard paint I mentioned in my previous post. Oh yes, I love this paint, it really is awesome. Here in my Moleskine sketchbook, I fully painted the two pages, however you certainly do not have do that. You can just paint in some areas of your journal pages.

I collaged several items onto the pages using a glue stick and used Prisma colored pencils to create the chalk affect. Glue sticks works best because collaging with gel medium in a decoupage style would ruin the surface of the chalkboard paint.

Now.... on to the typography how-to.
I had my chalkboard pages painted and dry. I started my typography print by looking on Pinterest for some chalkboard fonts and then went and downloaded them. Yes, there are so many to choose from. I put together several including some dingbats to make this quote.

I printed out the words on basic copy paper. *I have it for download at the end of this post.

Then I used a pencil to go over the lettering on the backside of the paper. I used a 6B pencil (soft lead) but you can certainly use a basic #2 pencil. You can see how I only covered the lead on the areas where the lettering was. Most of us probably remember this from elementary school art class. If you have trouble seeing through to the front of the printed text place the paper on a window to see where you are working (of course this would be done in daylight ;D).
Next, I placed the print on top of my prepared chalkboard page, positioned it and used a light tack tape to secure it into place. I actually used washi tape, it removes easily, but painters blue tape would work well too. Then, using a very sharp 8H pencil hard lead pencil I traced over the entire quote. You could use a #2 pencil for this too, you will just need to keep your pencil point very sharp to capture all the detail of fonts.

Once the quote is completely transferred to the chalkboard painted page (check to make sure you have it all transferred before removing the taped page), remove the printed page. Next use a white Prisma colored pencil to make your chalk typography lettering. Here too, you want to keep your white colored pencil very sharp for the detailed areas. Some places will need a duller point of the pencil like the outside of the word 'power'. Play with it a bit but, take your time.

You will be astonished how you can create some gorgeous chalkboard typography in your art journal.

More Chalkboard Art Journal Pages-Chalkboard Paint

Chalkboard Art
Hi there visitors, I wanted to share some more of my art journal pages with the chalkboard style that I talked about in my last post.
And now I must tell you that although when I first started playing with this medium I created the recipe for making my own chalkboard paint in order not to have to buy a quart of chalkboard paint. But that was over a year ago when I started dabbling in this, and since I have found the small 4oz. bottles of chalkboard paint  from by Americana from DecoArt.
Available online here in The Shoppe at Somerset.
I have tried this wonderful paint and have found it to be fierce, yes, that is a good thing. It really is remarkable and much easier than my recipe in my article in Art Journaling by Somerset, Autumn 2013. It is much more convenient to use and even though the directions call for two coats, I have found that one coat applied evenly and well with a flat brush is sufficient in my art journals. So, by all means try this product if you want to experiment with chalkboard paint. I would definitely still use the colored pencils for writing and drawing. It is better to not have your work smeared away if you use chalk.
Here are some more pages in my journals playing with this medium.

I Have a New Article About ChalkBoard Art in the Latest ART JOURNALING Magazine

Hi there visitors. I am extremely pleased to announce my latest published article in Art Journaling Magazine by Somerset Studio, on newsstands now. I want to thank Amber Demien the Senior Managing Editor for this opportunity, her editing assistance and giving me a mention in her Letter from the Editor on page 4. I am truly honored and thrilled.

I have been having so much fun with this popular style and finding ways of incorporating it into my art journals. I must say I have a lot to share with you on this topic in the upcoming weeks to inspire you to try this medium in your journals, but for now I wanted to share some more of the photos of the mini journal featured in my article.
